David Unsworth signed his one-year deal with the Clarets in August 2007.

The 33-year-old former England international had been a free agent after being released by Wigan Athletic in the summer.

Unsworth has been allocated the squad number 26 at Turf Moor.

The powerful and experienced defender has been a dominant feature in Owen Coyle's squad, scoring his first clarets goal in the home game against Leicester City in December 2007.

In summer 2008 he was offered a one year contract to continue his career at Burnley as a player/coach with a remit to develop the club's youngsters.

The uncompromising defender began an illustrious career at Everton, progressing through the youth ranks and eventually captaining the Toffees in the first of two Goodison Park spells.

In 1997, two years after playing a key part in Everton's FA Cup final winning team, he joined West Ham United. Hovever, a season later he was involved in a bizarre move back to Merseyside.

After initially signing for Aston Villa for £3m, he re-joined Everton for the same fee just a month later citing family reasons.

Unsworth became a consistent performer in his second spell with the Blues, making well in excess of 200 appearances and finding the net regularly as penalty taker.

After his contract expired in the summer of 2004, Portsmouth swooped to sign the left-sided stopper, but with first team starts limited he spent the second half of the season on loan at Ipswich Town.

In August 2005, Sheffield United signed Unsworth on a three-year deal and he made 40 appearances for the Blades before being placed on the transfer list.

Premiership outfit Wigan duly signed him in the 2007 January transfer window - and in an ironic twist, the experienced defender scored the penalty on the final day of the season to condemn former club United to relegation.

Despite his last gasp heroics, Unsworth was released by the Latics in summer 2007 and he became former manager Steve Cotterill's fifth summer signing.
