Burnley became Scunthorpe United's first Championship victims following a disappointing day at Glanford Park.

Goals from Martin Paterson and Jim Goodwin put the Iron in control after a goalless first half.

And despite late pressure from the Clarets, coming from behind for the third successive game was a bridge too far for Steve Cotterill's side.

The Clarets boss made nine changes to the side that defeated Grimsby Town on penalties on Tuesday night.

Gabor Kiraly returned in goal, while only Stephen Jordan and Michael Duff retained their place from the Carling Cup tie.

There was a debut for Clarke Carlisle following his midweek move from Watford, while David Unsworth made his league debut at centre back wearing the captain's armband.

Amazingly, there hadn't been a home win between these two sides in 10 attempts, way back since 1989. And with three points already in the bag Burnley arrived in hope of extending that sequence.

And a bright start saw early pressure from the Clarets and a Joey Gudjonsson shot that flew just wide.

Unsworth was narrowly off target with a downward header as the pressure intensified.

And from the fifth corner inside the opening 10 minutes, the Clarets skipper perhaps should have fired the Clarets ahead when Blake's corner pinballed back to him at the near post.

Chris McCann blazed a 25-yard shot wide and Carlisle tuned a wicked Blake free kick over as the opportunities continued to come.

Nothing had been seen of the Iron attack, but a mistake from Gabor Kiraly just before the half hour presented Nigel Adkins with a golden chance.

The Hungarian came to the edge of the area to clear a free kick, but his weak punch fell for Ian Baraclough to sweep the ball back over his head towards an empty net.

Thankfully, Unsworth had read the danger and used all his experience to drop back and clear the danger inside his six-yard box.

Kiraly then made amends with a smart save low to his right from Martin Paterson. But finally the home side were baring their teeth and Unsworth saved the Clarets again with a heard over his own crossbar when Kiraly made another rash decision.

And as the hosts ended the half in the ascendancy, substitute Andy Butler glanced a heard just over the angle of bar and post.

It took just 90 seconds for Scunthorpe to continue where they left off at half time.

Burnley were caught sleeping form a free kick and as the ball was played into the near post Martin Paterson drilled the ball low past Kiraly to open the scoring.

Blake had one touch too many after a superb weaving run as he tried to put Burnley back on level terms immediately.

And Kyle Lafferty replaced Harley wide on the left just before the hour as Steve Cotterill looked to add another string to his attacking bow.

Wade Elliott, making his 300th league appearance, had a chance to pick out Gray after Joe Murphy made a hash of a punched clearance, but could only chip the ball into the grateful arms of the backtracking United keeper.

And in the 64th minute Burnley were left with a mountain to climb after being hit with a sucker punch.

Jonathan Forte was the architect on the right with a slide rule ball inside to Jim Goodwin, who skipped clear of Unsworth and slotted the ball past Kiraly from 18 yards.

Ade Akinbiyi replaced Elliott in a second attempt to spark a recovery. And the striker was instantly into the action, chesting the ball down for Blake to fire harmlessly wide.

With just over a quarter of an hour remaining, McCann drove a shot in from distance that Murphy rose to turn over the bar.

And as Burnley turned the screw, Unsworth saw a header cleared off the line from the 11th corner of the game, before Duff saw his point-blank header blocked by Murphy.

However, it was all in vain as United held firm to announce their arrival back in the Championship with three deserved points.
