Chris McCann was the unlikely hero as Burnley snatched all three points at the death for the second home game in succession.
Few thought the drama of Andy Gray's last minute winner against Preston last week could be matched.
But McCann had other ideas and the Irish midfielder - operating as an emergency centre half - popped up in the Town area in the dying seconds to give Burnley their third successive victory.
Manager of the month Steve Cotterill was forced to utilise McCann in his unfamiliar role after skipper Wayne Thomas failed to shake off a knee injury that forced him to miss Tuesday's victory at Luton.
In attack there was better news, with Gifton Noel-Williams shaking off 'flu to partner nine-goal Andy Gray. But it was the visitors who started the brighter and Brian Jensen saved well from former Claret Alan Lee in the 11th minute.
The Clarets were struggling to cope with some slick passing in the opening quarter, although stout defending limited Town to scraps in and around the box.
And Burnley's first attempt almost gave them the lead in the 26th minute. Frank Sinclair's looping cross was not dealt with by goalkeeper Shane Supple and Chris McCann looked odds on to score as the ball dropped eight years out.
However, his power-packed volley was superbly blocked by a combination of Richard Naylor and Simon Walton.
And as Burnley found their stride, Steve Jones soon tested Supple from a tight angle after cutting back inside onto his right foot.
However, as a tense and scrappy half came to a close, Town came close to opening the scoring themselves as Lee turned on the edge of the 18-yard line and only just missed the target with a low drive.
The second half saw the pendulum swing straight back to Burnley and Steve Jones perhaps should have given Cotterill's side the lead five minutes in.
Gray flicked on Jensen's long ball upfield and the speed merchant, clear through on goal, took one touch to settle but fired across a gaping goal with his second.
Jones was eager to atone for that miss and with the hour mark just gone he stung Supple's gloves with rasping drive from distance as the hosts tried to exert more pressure.
As Burnley had in the opening half, Ipswich weathered that little storm and again the half became a tense, nip and tuck affair, with petty free kicks awarded by late replacement referee Phil Joslin halting any momentum.
Jones flashed another dangerous ball across the six yard box and at the other end, Lee's rampaging run and shot was deflected for a corner.
Simon Walton saw glory with 20 minutes remaining and let fly from fully 30 yards, but Jensen comfortably turned the low drive aside for yet another Town corner.
A goalless draw was looking increasingly inevitable as two honest, hard working teams continued to cancel each other out in the final third.
And when Town winger Roberts thought he had broken the deadlock after running on to Lee's through ball - only to see a linesman's flag halt his premature celebrations - Town too sensed this might not be their day.
That was confirmed in the dying seconds of normal time. Cotterill had by now made three late substitutions; Alan Mahon, John Spicer and Kyle Lafferty replacing Wade Elliott, Jones and Noel-Williams respectively.
But it was the outstanding McCann who grabbed all the glory with a stunning 90th minute header from a quick, short corner taken by Michael Duff and crossed perfectly to the far post by Mahon.
There was still time for Micah Hyde to be sent off for an innouous second bookable offence deep into stoppage time.
But even another setback to a threadbare squad could not surpress the raucous cheers that greeted the final whistle as the Clarets bandwagon rolls on and on!
