Burnley secured their place in the third round of the Carling Cup, courtesy of a comfortable win against Barnsley at Turf Moor.

The Clarets always looked in control against the League One side and after taking a first half lead, added to the tally in the second half and playing some fine football in the process.

Goals from Keith Lowe and John Spicer, their first for the club and Ade Akinbiyi's seventh of the season did enough and all eyes will now be on Saturday's draw for the third round.

Barnsley carved out the first chance of the game though when Martin Devaney crossed from the right for Marc Richards, but his diving header was easily saved by Danny Coyne.

At the other end though, Graham Branch and Akinbiyi combined well with the latter nodding a ball back for Branch. He shot right footed, but Scott Flinders was equal to it and made a save low to his right.

Akinbiyi then had a shot of his own after being played through by Garreth O'Connor on the break but unfortunately he didn't really connect as he would've liked and Flinders saved again.

Tykes striker Daniel Nardiello then came close when his left foot volley from Chris Shuker's cross flew into the side netting when Barnsley hit the Clarets on the break.

Burnley had the lead after 27 minutes, when a corner was clipped into the area by Garreth O'Connor from the left. Branch flicked it on at the near post and Lowe arrived with perfect timing at the back post to nod the Clarets in front with his first career goal.

The Clarets were enjoying the vast majority of the possession whilst pushing for a second goal, but Barnsley were particularly dogged and determined at the back and space was hard to find in the final third for Burnley which meant clear chances were limited.

Burnley continued to control the game in the second half and had doubled their lead after 52 minutes, when Akinbiyi slipped the offside trap to latch on to Coyne's long ball over the top. He controlled it beautifully, before nipping the ball around Flinders and sliding home into an empty goal.

Garreth O'Connor then came close to getting a goal himself, when he struck a sweet volley at goal from the edge of the area, after Jon Harley's corner was headed out to him.

They didn't have to wait long for the third though, when the ball was knocked into the area for Akinbiyi. He then picked out a super pass for Spicer who made no mistake by clipping a confident finish past Flinders on his full home debut.

With the game won and just over 15 minutes to play, Steve Cotterill introduced Gifton Noel Williams and Frank Sinclair to the match, replacing two of the goalscorers in Akinbiyi and Lowe and shortly after that Chris McCann came on for the highly impressive man-of-the-match Micah Hyde.

McCann had only been on for a matter of seconds before he almost added a fourth with a curling shot from the edge of the area which Flinders did well to turn away for a corner.

Back at the Burnley end, Coyne was a virtual spectator for most of the time, with a powerful long ranger from Nardiello and a shot over the bar from Nicky Wroe the only things to catch his attention.

With the game all but over, Burnley continued to play the match out and enjoy long spells of possession whilst always looking for another goal without pushing things too far.

McCann tried his luck again, this time from 30 yards after being set up by Garreth O'Connor but his shot was deflected over for a corner.

After two minutes of added time though, the referee brought the game to an end and Burnley were glad to be through having made good preparations for the game with Brighton and Hove Albion at the weekend.
