Burnley had to settle for a point at Turf Moor, to see both games between the Clarets and Southampton this season finish all square following the same scoreline at St.Mary's in December.
The Clarets can perhaps consider themselves unfortunate not to have taken all three points though, after putting some considerable pressure on the visitors in the second half although the Saints had their opportunities to win too.
The match only got the go ahead just over an hour before kick-off, when the referee inspected the Bob Lord Stand flank before giving the match the green light following an afternoon of heavy rain at Turf Moor making for a difficult pitch for football.
Burnley got off to the worst possible start though, when Southampton took the lead within 40 seconds of kick off. The move started when Richard Chaplow and Grzegorz Rasiak linked to send Jermaine Wright through on the right channel. He played a low ball into the middle which Rasiak couldn't quite guide home, but with confusion in the defence, it was Phil Bardsley who got the last touch to divert the ball past Brian Jensen.
The Clarets didn't let it get them down though and they were back level within 10 minutes. James O'Connor knocked a ball over the top from within his own half and when Danny Higginbotham slipped, it allowed Andy Gray to run clear on goal. He rounded Saints keeper and debutant Kevin Miller to slot home well from a tight angle for his second goal in successive games at Turf Moor.
Chaplow had a great chance to put Saints ahead after 19 minutes though, when he received the ball in the area and things looked to open up for him. Just as he was about to shoot though, Chris McCann made a fine block before Bardsley cleared the danger.
Southampton were enjoying the better of the possession, although Jensen was rarely troubled aside from a dipping volley from Jim Brennan which went just over the bar.
The Clarets had a half chance in the 36th minute, when Graham Branch rolled a pass down the left flank for Mahon and his cross flashed across goal with both Gray and Michael Ricketts close to connecting.
After a minute of added time, the first half was brought to an end with the sides level, although the Clarets would have the wind behind them for the second period.
It showed too as Burnley started the second half the brighter, with Jon Harley unfortunate to see his powerful 25 yarder fly narrowly over the bar.
McCann then saw a right footer from inside the box deflected over, after he collected a chest down from Gray, who was again leading the line well for the Clarets.
At the other end, Saints had a good chance when Duff's slip allowed Peter Madsen a chance to chip a cross to the far post but Brennan found the angle just too tight and his stretched shot went wide.
Mahon then came even closer when he was picked out with an instinctive forward pass from James O'Connor. The Irishman took the ball onwards and fired a super shot goalwards. It had Miller beaten, but came crashing back off the crossbar and the visitors could breathe again.
Gray was then close to getting on the end of a flick in the box from Ricketts, but Claus Lundekvam got in the way and Miller was out quickly to save.
Moments after that Harley's far post cross was headed back into the area by Ricketts for McCann and after holding his man off well, he struck a low right footer at goal which Miller saved well with his feet.
Saints had a breakaway in the 76th minute when substitute Kenwyne Jones took advantage of Harley's slip in the box, but with a free shot at goal he dragged it well wide of the far post.
At the other end, Miller's heroics denied Harley a goal when his original cross into the box was knocked back into him by Mahon. The impressive left back controlled well and volleyed a shot at goal but Miller's reactions were superb as he clawed the shot around the post.
That proved to be the final opportunity of the game for either side though and after four minutes of added time, the final whistle sounded with both sides taking a share of the spoils.
