The Clarets' recent run of results continued at Hillsborough, as Burnley took a point on the road against scrapping Sheffield Wednesday.

Given the circumstances for the home side, it was always going to be a real battle on the pitch and that was how it turned out, although Burnley had the better chances in the game.

Opportunities were few and far between throughout the match though, with both teams showing lots of industry and endeavour but on a windy day in South Yorkshire the conditions were never ideal for flowing football.

Burnley came close in the early stages, when a foul on Andy Gray brought a free kick on the right hand side. Alan Mahon swung an inviting free kick into the area which picked out Frank Sinclair, but his header went wide of the post.

Wednesday's first real effort came just after the 10 minute mark when a long throw-in from the left evaded everyone and bounced to the far post where Chris Brunt arrived to nod over the bar with Brian Jensen left scurrying back.

Jensen was then forced into a smart save to deny Marcus Tudgay after the Clarets were caught out defensively on the right. Tudgay's driven low shot was parried out, for Chris McCann to complete the clearance.

Chances were generally kept to a minimum though, with the home fans' biggest cheers reserved for score updates from the electronic board as they kept an eye on the matters elsewhere regarding their relegation scrap.

Gray did well to fashion a chance for himself when he chested down a ball in from Graham Branch on the right. He turned his man well, but his shot was half-blocked by Graham Coughlan and Owls keeper Scott Carson was left with a simple save.

That was about all for the first half, although the Clarets started brightly in the second period and had a decent spell of pressure on their hosts.

At one stage, Phil Bardsley managed to break forward on the right and into the box, but his cross flew across the face of goal and away from danger.

The Clarets were then awarded a free kick just outside the area, but Jon Harley's direct effort went well over the bar.

Sinclair came close to opening the scoring after 63 minutes when he rose highest to meet Mahon's corner kick, but again his effort went narrowly wide of the target.

Gray then came even closer when he latched on to a pass forward from James O'Connor to run clear on goal. He rounded Carson and slipped an angled shot goalwards but Frank Simek had covered well to block his effort.

Moments later, the best chance of the game fell to Chris McCann when Mahon's cross into the box picked him out. He was well positioned and un-marked but guided his header just wide of the target.

As time went on, Wednesday tried to assert themselves on the game more and more but just couldn't find a telling pass, cross or shot on goal.

With the match in the final few minutes, Wednesday had an ambitious shout for a penalty when Glenn Whelan's shot hit O'Connor from point blank range in the area but the referee was well placed to deny the claim.

There was an added three minutes at the end which gave the home crowd slight hope, but the Burnley defence, excellently marshalled again by Sinclair and Michael Duff, always looked comfortable in protecting Jensen behind them.
