Burnley slipped to another cruel defeat at Turf Moor, as Wolverhampton Wanderers took a 1-0 win back to Molineux following a game which was controlled by the Clarets.
Possession was dominated by Burnley in both the first and second half, with Glenn Hoddle's side taking the points thanks to a first half breakaway strike from Paul Ince. Wolves had half chances, but mainly relied on counter attacks throughout the game.
The second half in particular saw an almost constant barrage of pressure from the home team, but they just couldn't break down the Wolves' back line which numbered no fewer than seven men at times.
In many ways, it was a very similar to the game between the two sides at Molineux earlier in the season when the Clarets scored and were left hanging on throughout the second half.
Burnley started well and almost caught out Wolves in the eighth minute, when Jon Harley took a quick free kick following a foul on Gifton Noel-Williams but unfortunately he curled his effort just high and wide of the target.
James O'Connor then stung the hands of Stefan Postma with a 20 yard shot, after being set up well by Chris McCann.
Noel-Williams fell under Joleon Lescott's challenge in the area following good work on the right wing by Wade Elliott, but the referee chose not to award a spot kick shortly after that.
It was Wolves who took the lead after 15 minutes though, with their first effort of the game. Maurice Ross crossed from the right for Carl Cort, who headed back to Paul Ince and his powerful low strike from the edge of the box flew through a crowd of players and past Brian Jensen.
The visitors should have had another in the 19th minute, when Jensen's mis-kick ricocheted off Micah Hyde and into the path of Thomasz Frankowski. He struck a low shot at goal, but Jensen got a touch on the ball to turn it wide of the post.
At the other end, Michael Ricketts came close when his left footer from the edge of the box went narrowly over the bar.
A poor clearance from Lescott from Harley's cross fell straight to Elliott soon after that, but his first time shot was tipped over well by Postma as Burnley looked for a way back into the game.
Jensen had to make a good save in the 25th minute, when Kenny Miller picked out Lee Naylor following an earlier corner for the visitors. He brought the ball inside and hit a low drive at goal but the Danish keeper got two solid hands on it and the danger was cleared.
Cort then tried his luck following a swift counter attack from Wolves, but again Jensen was in the right place to make a comfortable save.
As the first half drew to a close, a neat move from the Clarets saw McCann play a low cross into the middle but the ball was just behind Noel-Williams and the chance was gone.
Burnley started the brighter of the sides again after the re-start and Michael Duff had a half chance when the ball dropped to him following Harley's corner kick, but he shot well wide of the target from 10 yards out.
There were also a couple of shouts for a penalty, with a dubious looking handball from Lescott looking the most likely as the Clarets continued their onslaught.
Hyde was then denied again by Postma when he struck a low volley at goal following a cut back from McCann on the left.
Burnley's pressure continued and another chance went begging when Harley's cross from the left was cleared to Spicer, but his shot flew over the bar.
Hyde tried his luck again on two occasions from distance, but firstly Postma and then an off target shot meant the Clarets had to keep battling on.
A rare breakaway from the visitors in the 78th minute saw Cort run clear of the defence, but when he played a square pass into the box, youngster Mark Davies shot well wide.
Burnley just couldn't find the breakthrough they needed though and the visitors managed to hang on for three points and deny the Clarets who certainly deserved something out of the match.
