Burnley missed out on a deserved point at Home Park, as a goal 30 seconds into the second half handed Plymouth Argyle their first home win of the season.
The Clarets enjoyed long spells of pressure and possession in the game and can consider themselves highly unfortunate not to have got a goal themselves.
It was another sloppy goal to concede too and one that boss Steve Cotterill will not be pleased with following the faultless defensive at Deepdale just four days earlier.
Burnley can be encouraged by the number of chances they created over the 90 minutes though and will be able to take confidence from the fluency of their display.
The Clarets started brightly and Burnley's first effort came early on, when Micah Hyde fired in a shot from the edge of the area after a corner had been cleared but he didn't fully connect with his left foot and Romain Larrieu saved easily.
Ade Akinbiyi then had the ball in the net after latching on to a flick from Gifton Noel Williams, but an offside flag had been raised and the goal was ruled out.
Noel Williams then tested Larrieu with a looping header from Jon Harley's cross in the eighth minute.
Burnley were certainly having the better of the play in the opening stages and when Hyde burst forward from midfield, Noel Williams could have been through on goal but his touch was a little heavy and allowed Larrieu to come out and claim the ball.
Akinbiyi then had the first real chance of the game in the 29th minute, when he raced onto a ball from John McGreal and beat Taribo West into the area. However, he didn't connect with his shot as he would've liked and Larrieu made a smart stop with his legs.
Akinbiyi then showed his worth at the other end, when he cleared Mat Doumbe's header off the line following an inswinging corner from Bojan Djordjic.
Matt Derbyshire had a half chance in the 40th minute, after latching on to Mickey Evans' header but putting his shot well over the bar under pressure from McGreal.
Danny Coyne then had to make his first save of the game after 43 minutes, when Djordjic shot at goal from the edge of the area but the Clarets keeper had positioned himself well and made a straightforward stop just before the half time whistle sounded.
The second half began terribly for the Clarets, starting with Hyde being tackled straight after the kick-off and allowing Argyle to attack. Burnley failed to clear the ball twice before it fell to Evans on the edge of the box and he made no mistake by striking past Coyne just 30 seconds after the re-start.
Burnley had a good chance to get level when Akinbiyi nodded back Harley's cross for James O'Connor, but just as he struck at goal Hasney Aljofree made a brave block and the opportunity passed.
Hyde, once again in impressive form for the Clarets, then came close again when he flashed a shot just over the bar following a corner from the right.
Another chance came for the Clarets in the 67th minute, when John Spicer's cross from the right looked perfect for Noel Williams but Akinbiyi got there first and flicked a header over his team-mate.
Akinbiyi then turned provider when he picked out substitute Graham Branch in the area, but Doumbe made a good challenge to block his run and end the danger.
Burnley continued to press and a long ball from Coyne found Branch in some space on the edge of the area, but the ball seemed to take an age to land and when it did, Branch's right footer was blocked by West.
Some sustained pressure then ended with Branch's run and cross into the box, but Noel Williams should have done better with his header after nodding it over the bar.
At the other end, Coyne kept the Clarets in it when he made a fine save to deny David Norris' header following a good cross from the left by the impressive Djordjic.
The Clarets kept pressing though and should have sealed a draw in the last minute when O'Connor's cross from the right was headed narrowly wide by Branch from six yards.
Burnley's final effort came from Harley, whose low free kick from 25 yards bounced a foot wide of the post with Larrieu flat footed.
It proved to be the last chance of the game though and after four minutes of added time the Clarets had to travel back to Lancashire without the point they deserved.
