Garreth O'Connor.

Burnley ended their Molineux hoodoo and picked up their first away win of the season at Friday night when Garreth O'Connor's superb first half free kick proved enough to seal the points against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Clarets had to survive a second half onslaught from the home side in the second half and rode their luck on more than a couple of occasions but given the rotten fortune of Burnley so far in the season, it was more than deserved.

It was Burnley's first goal and win at Molineux since 1986 and a brave and determined performance from the Clarets who looked solid throughout the game and did exactly what they needed to do to keep a clean sheet.

Despite Wolves enjoying most of the possession and pressure in the early stages, it was Burnley who forced the first real save of the game from Michael Oakes. John Spicer led the break before feeding James O'Connor, whose shot from the edge of the box was beaten clear by the Wolves keeper. It came out to Garreth O'Connor and Oakes did well to catch his crisp half volley in the 15th minute.

At the other end, Kenny Miller glanced a header wide from Rohan Rickett's right wing cross but it never really troubled Brian Jensen.

The Clarets took the lead after 22 minutes though, when James O'Connor was tripped on the edge of the area for a free kick. Wolves weren't happy with the award, but it was to make no difference when Garreth O'Connor stepped up to curl a low shot into the bottom corner after Micah Hyde and James O'Connor had blocked the view of Oakes.

With 31 minutes played, Wolves still hadn't hit the target but they almost broke that trend when Carl Cort headed Rob Edwards' into the ground and over the bar from seven yards.

Ade Akinbiyi then broke on to a lovely ball through by Jon Harley and crossed towards the unmarked Spicer, but Wolves defender Gabor Gyepes got a crucial touch to clear the danger.

Wolves finally managed a shot on target just a minute before half time, when the ball fell to Cort in the area but Jensen spread himself well and blocked the shot before Seol Ki-Hyeon shot into the side netting from the rebound to leave the Clarets in front at the break.

Wolves started the second half well and forced the game on Burnley, but the Clarets continued to defend strongly and frustrate the home side whilst looking to hit them on the break.

Glenn Hoddle's side had a sustained spell of pressure just before the hour mark, with Seol proving a thorn in Burnley's side but a combination of desperate defending and work rate managed to keep Wolves at bay although Joleon Lescott should have done better when a good chance fell to him in the box rather than screw his shot wide.

The Clarets were almost undone in the 62nd minute, when John McGreal was injured on the half way line only for Wolves to play on. Kenny Miller knocked a cross-shot into the area and Jensen got there just before Cort to save the danger.

Jensen had to make another good save to keep Wolves at bay in the 68th minute when Edwards ran from the right and broke into the box, but the Dane was brave and made a good block.

Wolves were throwing everything at the Clarets and they came close when Seol's mishit shot turned into a goalmouth scramble before Garreth O'Connor got a vital boot in to clear.

A typical Burnley breakaway could have seen the Clarets grab a second when Spicer slipped a pass through for Akinbiyi, but Gyepes tracked back well and eventually forced a tackle on the striker.

Wolves came even closer with just over 10 minutes when they hit the bar twice in a matter of seconds through Miller and Ricketts following a cross from Lee Naylor.

With the game heading toward injury time, Wolves' sense of urgency seemed to dip and when three minutes of added time were shown the Clarets did enough to hold out for a memorable victory.
