A last gasp goal from James O'Connor sealed a point for Burnley at Turf Moor after a thrilling game with Cardiff City. Both teams will feel they could have won the game with plenty of chances on offer and a frantic spell of added time at the end when it could have gone either way.

The first half in particular was enthralling stuff, with the Clarets enjoying plenty of possession but conceding two disappointing goals.

Cardiff edged in front for the first time late in the game, but Burnley showed their character to seal a deserved point and bring an entertaining affair to a close.

Burnley made a bright start and took an early lead in the first minute, when a ball into the box was controlled by Ade Akinbiyi. He laid a pass off for Elliott, who placed a shot into the bottom corner to score his first goal for the club just one minute after his return from injury.

A mix-up at the back between Danny Coyne and Frank Sinclair almost let Cardiff straight back into the game though, but fortunately for Burnley Cameron Jerome skied his shot from the edge of the box with the goal at his mercy.

It didn't take Jerome long to make his mark though and he brought Cardiff level after seven minutes by latching on to Michael Ricketts' flick-on and finishing superbly from an angle in the box.

Ricketts then had a good opportunity himself when Jason Koumas knocked a ball over the top for him, but after spinning John McGreal he shot well over the bar.

Cardiff really should have taken the lead again when they hit Burnley on the break through Koumas. With runners to either side of him, the Burnley defence let him run and run and it took a clearance off the line from Michael Duff to deny him a goal.

Burnley began to work their way back into the match though and a good move in the 19th minute ended with a header wide from Gifton Noel Williams following a left wing cross from Jon Harley.

A run and cross into the box from Graham Branch then caused allsorts of problems for Cardiff, but Darren Purse managed to get a boot on the ball and clear the danger.

The Clarets had re-taken the ascendancy by now and it was no surprise when they were back in front after 23 minutes. Micah Hyde kept a move flowing with a pass out wide to Harley. He played a ball into the area and when Purse could only half head clear, Elliott was waiting at the far post to fire home a fine volley with his right foot.

Akinbiyi could have made it 3-1 in the 36th minute, when another good move saw Duff's cross from the right pick out the striker. He controlled it with his chest, but volleyed wide from eight yards and the chance had gone.

With half time just seconds away though, Cardiff got themselves level again when Koumas' corner from the left was met firmly at the far post by the head of defender Glenn Loovens and he gave Coyne no chance whatsoever to bring the first half to a disappointing end for the Clarets.

Burnley started the second half well and Noel Williams was agonisingly close to getting a touch to Elliott's cross from the right, but Purse managed to head away only seconds after the re-start.

Another cross from Elliott picked Branch at the far post and his looping header had Neil Alexander scrambling back, but there was too much height on it and the ball landed on the roof of the goal.

It was Cardiff who should have been in front though, when a Kevin Cooper's corner from the right picked out the un-marked Joe Ledley but his header went wide when he should have done better.

Rickets had another fine chance to open his account in the 62nd minute, when he was picked out in space by Koumas' free kick but his header went over the bar and Burnley were let off the hook again after leaving a man free in the box.

Cardiff went in front for the first time after 70 minutes, when Burnley sloppily wasted possession allowing Jerome a run on goal. He went and broke into the box where he was upended by Sinclair for a penalty. Purse stepped up to send Coyne the wrong way and put the Bluebirds ahead.

Burnley introduced both John Spicer and Karl Bermingham to the action in a bid to draw things level, but Cardiff had tightended themselves up at the back and tried all manner of tricks to wind down the clock leaving Burnley frustrated once again.

They deservedly clawed their way back into the game though with just two minutes remaining, when Harley's cross was cleared as far as Spicer. He chipped a clever ball back into the danger zone for James O'Connor, who headed over Alexander and into the net.

That goal gave Burnley the impetus to continue and with four minutes of added time, they sensed the chance of a winner. However, the Welshmen held firm to hold on for a point.
