David Unsworth has ended his association with Burnley Football Club after turning down the offer of a player/coaching role at Turf Moor.

The 34-year-old defender had been offered the dual role by Clarets manager Owen Coyle after his initial one-year deal expired this summer.

However, the former Everton and England defender has expressed a desire to extend his playing career and becomes a free agent from July 1.

Coyle said: "David still wanted to play at the highest level possible and I fully understand that.

"However, we cannot guarantee him a first team place at Burnley and we made that clear.

"There was an offer on the table that would have meant David taking a significant hit financially, but equally would have given him the opportunity to move into coaching.

"However, after having a chat we have amicably decided on a parting of the ways.

Coyle added: "I am genuinely sorry to see David go.

"He is a true professional and a really good guy and he leaves with all our best wishes."

Unsworth made 31 appearances for the Clarets following his arrival on a free transfer from Wigan Athletic.

His one goal for the club came in the 1-1 draw with Leicester City in November, 2007.

Off the field, Chorley-born Unsworth made many more friends after donating £1,000 from his own pocket to boost an appeal for schoolgirl Jessica Knight, who was stabbed repeatedly in an unprovoked attack in Chorley.

Everyone at Turf Moor would like to wish David all the best in his continued career.
