The Heroes Behind The Honours

The Champions Of 1920-21

In 1920/1921 the Clarets won their first championship title, with arguably the best squad of players ever to represent Burnley Football Club.

The team consisted of players such as Alf Bassnett, Len Smelt, David Taylor, Jerry Dawson, Cliff Jones, Walter Weaver, Billy Nessbit, Bob Kelly, Joe Anderson, Benny Cross, Eddie Mosscrop, George Halley, Tommy Boyle, and Willie Watson.  After losing the first three league games of the season, the Clarets embarked on a glorious run of 30 matches without defeat, lasting almost seven months from September 6 1920 to March 26 1921.

That record stood as the longest unbeaten sequence in English League football in a single season for over 80 years

Division One Champions 1959/60

For the 1959/60 season, two wins got the season off to a good start, but then the Clarets lost to West Ham United to make a rollercoaster start to the season.

After ten games, they drew second place with Arsenal and Wolves, a point behind Spurs and eight games further into the campaign it was all change at the top with West Ham and Preston sharing the lead, a point ahead of Spurs with Burnley a further point in arrears.

The Clarets and Wolves were a big threat to whoever held the lead. A few matches later, Burnley had truly announced their intensions and had become a force to be reckoned with for several seasons before actually getting their name inscribed again on the famous trophy.

But perhaps the most remarkable thing about the season is that Burnley did not actually top the table until they beat Manchester City in the very last game to win the Championship for the second time.
